The sharing of files will soon become a criminal offense, if at the g8 summit currently being held, leaders agree on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).

The agreement will give border authorities the right to search through your laptops and MP3 players for possible infringement and to seize the devices, fine, and imprison you. This puts at threat, almost all Internet users, and certainly anyone between the ages of 16-24 with an Mp3 player.

If it becomes law getting caught with illegal files could label you as a criminal and forcefully disconnected from the Internet. “ACTA is a Pirate Bay killer,” says the team behind the whistle blowing website Wikileaks. Which is where the content of the agreement, first came to light in may.

The speed of pogression is remarkable for an international law. But the lack of depolomacy and public debate has watchdogs and campainers alarmed.

You should also worry about a bunch of amendments to telecoms laws currently going through the European Parliament’s committee system. Several of which have been criticized by those campaigning for a more open net. Which is one thing about the Internet that I like (apart from gaming of course).

Every day Google continues to amaze me. It sometimes seems that they are a treasure chest rather than a multinational corporation. The number of free tools they have increaces almost week by week, just last Monday they announced Google Friend Connect. This is a new service that allows site owners to include OpenSocial apps, these are gadgets that use user’s accounts from sites such as AOL, OpenID to do social things on your website. The number of things possible is only limited by developers, As we know from the number of wordpress plugins, this could possibly be a great source of gadgets that could be added to any site.

This is just another great and free tool for webmasters to use. And while I wont be using it in its current form, its invaluable for someone without coding experiance to add ’social’ to their website. However I wonder sometimes when its going to come back to haunt us, perhaps if Google gets bought up and and everyones tools become pay to use. But I prefer to be optimistic, so I cant wait for Google to bring out more tools. The way things are going we’ll soon have every website interconnected and able to share friends from each one of them. I’m not sure this is something I’m particularity looking forward to, as I prefer to keep my real-life friends separate to my Internet friends.

I use a range of tools from google, all of which have helped me improve the website. These are some of the webmaster tools I use.

Exams begin this week and carry on until the 6th of June, I have a total of 6 exams consisting of 12 hours of writing. While i think I should pass them all, I’m a little worried about one of them, since I have to get a minimum of 66% otherwise I fail the module.. I guess I should of completed more of the coursework.

I blame my low marks on the fact that it is a physics module, as I hate physics. A lot. While I like the subject, I hate how education teaches it, as all it entails is remembering formula and lots of facts. I wish they would explain whats going on, rather than have you blindly following what they say.
In other news I have a Technorati Profile.

As I move closer to using wordpress as a CMS. I look into the possibilities available for using wordpress as a flexible CMS, and the plugins needed for a successful conversion.

While Wordpress is designed as a blogging tool, it can be used as a reliable back-end CMS. With the basic install of wordpress, plus a straight forward couple of edits to templates and a plugin or two and you have a content management system. A good CMS needs multi-user page editing, wordpress provides this in spades with its user management and its post and page creation system. It also makes it simple for non web savvy users to edit pages and post blogs.

Plugins

While wordpress could be used as a CMS out of the box a few plugins make the process much simpler. These are recommended as the basic install will buckle later on.

Firstly it needs to use the Static Front Page plugin, this brings whatever page is called ‘Home’ to the front page. This is where you then have an introduction rather than recent posts.

All sites should have a sitemap for getting on the search engines, and a plugin can automate this process. The Sitemap Generator for Wordpress does all the listing for everything posted within the system.

The possibilities of creating a fully dynamic site opens up with the plug-in PHP Exec plugin. This plug-in enables php within the contents of user’s posts, which with wordpress’s pages system produces instantly dynamic pages. However you need to trust your users or have strong limits on user levels.

Dont forget that there is a wealth of other plugins and unlimited help available at a touch of a button. I’ve found that many issues I have already have an answer through google, which makes troubleshooting an instant fix.

So why use wordpress as a content management system? If you want ease of use and flexibilty through plugins then wordpress beats other systems hands down. Remember for an almost limitless plugin directory visit the Wordpress Plugins site. Also check out Top 10 WordPress CMS Plugins for more plugins.

However, I’ve got absolutely no work done, but I’ve got a bit of a tan! Thankfully I am finally starting to enjoy university life, so next year should be great. I’m a little worried about my exams as for a couple of them I’ve struggled with the work, I didn’t sign up to do frigging physics. Ive enjoyed the computer science side of the course, which should mean i enjoy the rest of the degree.

Gonna make some revision notes tonight, so i can get some work done while I’m by the lake.

Seeds of Time is a browser based mmog. Its a simple and uncomplicated attempt at a browser mmo, which brings with it its own confusion. One obvious thing about the game is its short length, it isn’t finished and this could be discouraging. However since its an indie development by one guy (Josh), who himself seems like a nice guy, you can be assured its going to be continually developed. Another is the Graphics which are of a pixel art style, which I am not a fan of. It makes the game feel childish and under developed, without thought for the look of the game. While the graphics doesn’t interfere with the gameplay unlike other game types, it would make the game more appealing.

Since launch its got itself quite a dedicated little following in the 4 months it has been online. However this only numbers in the hundreds, but the forums are active and the chat is always alive. The game attempts to draw people to continue to play the game by providing you with energy, this tops up by a small amount every hour. However this top up feels like a minuscule amount, plus your energy bar can only hold 10 hours worth of energy. This obviously means to make the most of the game you have to play 3 times a day and at the same time, this is the most you can play the game, otherwise you will be wasting your own time.

The gameplay revolves around traditional mmog aspects of fighting monsters to level up and collect items. There is also the ability to collect and train monsters, however this ability can sometimes feel like an afterthought. The game doesn’t add anything new to the genre but does the traditional aspects of the genre well.

While the game acts and runs seriously, the graphics delayed my introduction to the game. And further into playing the game the gameplay issues caused me to give up logging into the game. However for anyone unsure, its still possible to get in early and stand a chance at being a top player.

I gave the game a 5 out of ten.

Boxhead: The Zombie Wars is the 5th games in the series of zombie style shooters. The zombies are box shaped and this version brings in a few new types of zombies. Zombie Wars brings a new feature to the series, now you can construct your own base with turrets and barricades. This mode is called defense where you are required to keep your base operational at all times otherwise the Zombies will over run you.

Now this is a great game, but it has its issues. Firstly there are too many zombies in the easier modes, while this is good for getting points, it means that the zombies quickly overrun you. Secondly, while the base items are availiable in the non defence games, the number of zombies is soon too many to build a base that can stand up to the zombies.

The graphics are very refined and give the game its comic style. However the sound is a little bland, and repetitive. But the guns all sound like they should, and make firing the rocket launcher fun. Gun upgrades can be unlocked by getting a higher bonus multiplier which you add to by killing zombies. Being the 5th in the series its surprising still to see continued innovation from the creator. Overall this is a great game, if being a little short and repetitive.

I give this a beefy 8 out of ten.

The game can be found here.

Harvest: massive encounter is the newly released game from oxeye games the makers of Dawn of Daria. harvest is an addictive strategy game that is hard to put down.

The games strength is its level of polish, every aspect has been improved in part due to its extensive beta process. This puts it in a good position to impress people who may not be so interested in strategy games. I certainly was impressed by its gameplay and spent many hours trying to improve my base. Since this is what the game is about, building the best base and staying alive for as long as possible. You begin on an empty planet with a couple of solar buildings and resources scattered around your base. You then move onto building miners and connecting points. This is when the aliens start to attack, slowly at first but as the game progresses their numbers rise. Your defenses come in the form of laser towers and missile turrets.

How you build your base is up to you, but in harvest there are a couple of better strategies which you discover as you play. This is the fun bit of the game, trying to find the ‘best fit’ base. Other gameplay types exist, they are wave mode, rush, insane and also creative where you can do what you like. theoretically there is unlimited gameplay here as you can never have the ‘best’ base. But the game does get repetitive thanks to the limited number of buildings and defenses.

The visuals and sound are both simple and repetitive but are very enjoyable. They inspire creativity and also enable the game to be run on lower spec computers.

Overall i found the game to be a great break from the hardcore games and highly addictive. However it didn’t last long before i returned to my hardcore games.

I would give the game a 7 out of 10.
